Shree Babulnath Mahadev Temple is one of the famous Shiv Temples of Mumbai.

In South Mumbai near the Sea-Shore of Chowpaty it is situated on a Small Hill adjacent to Malabar Hill. Devotees therefore rejoice as ‘Babulnaath Tekriwale Ki Jay’. There are various theories and legends on which the name ‘Babulnath’ is based. The most popular amongst them is that the name is derived after the name of One ‘Shri Babul’ a cowherd who found the ‘self – existent.*Shivling, you will find the meaning of *marked words in ‘glossary’ which is given in the end of the book-let.

Firstly ‘ Shri Babul had shown this shivling to his master Shri Pandurang. Secondly it is also said that since the Shivling was under the shadow of a Babul Tree, the same was named as Babulnath. Thirdly, Babul or Baba’ in Hindi language means ‘Father’.

In Rigveda Lord Rudra (Shiva) is called father of ‘Bhuvan’ i..e. Father of Universe. Babulnath * Mahadev, in real sense is Lord/Father of three Bhuvans. Thou art the household deity of Mumbai MEGA-CITY’. This is why the devotees cordially salute and pray by saying ‘जगत: पितरो वन्दे पार्वती परमेश्वरी’ i.e. The World salute the ultimate God who is also Lord/Husband of Parvati, the Goddess.
